Spotlight: Services for Students with Disabilities

By , October 12, 2010 8:34 am

[This information is provided by Scott Laurent, Manager of the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.]

The Office of Services for Students with Disabilities is the focal point on the UMKC campus for services for students with disabilities.  Our goal is to create a welcoming and supportive environment at UMKC for students with disabilities.  We do this by working with you to develop a set of academic accommodations that are designed to give you equal access to the learning environment here at UMKC.  We also partner across the University to create a campus atmosphere that makes all students with disabilities feel welcome and supported.

The first step is to call our office at 816.235.5696 and make an appointment.  We do require that students provide clinical documentation of their disability.  Guidelines for documenting various disabilities are on our website at http://www.umkc.edu/disability/documentation_current.asp.  During this meeting we’ll get acquainted, discuss your disability-related needs and agree upon a set of accommodations designed for you and they way your disability impacts you.  All accommodations are provided at no charge to you.

We are located in the University Center, on the upper level in Room 131.  We are here to help, so stop by and see us!

Study Tip: Organizing Essays

By , October 12, 2010 8:31 am

[This 3-part study tip about writing essays was provided by Lindsey Martin-Bowen, J.D.  She is a lecturer with the English and PACE departments, as well as the WEPT Coordinator for UMKC.  Her organization process should make writing an essay easier for any class!  Remember the WEPT is coming up on November 3rd!]

An organizational  format that feature writers often use can also apply to organizing college essays.  Remember, each part indicates a section of a “five-paragraph theme” that you should then expand into a multi-page essay.   Here’s the structure for a feature (or an essay) I share with my students:

Hey:  This grabs the reader’s attention.  Journalists refer to it as a “hook.”  It should be so interesting that it engages readers immediately so they want to finish reading the work.  Writers use such rhetorical devices as narratives, setting scenes, questions and answers, or beautifully structured and rhythmic language to entice the reader into the work.
