You don’t have to go it alone – Making use of the Counseling Center

College is a wonderful time of growth, fun, self-exploration, and transition.  You’ll be exposed to new ideas, people, and experiences…all of which makes for a rich adventure of learning and self-development.  Surely, it’s a fun time, but let’s face it – it can also be stressful.  It probably won’t shock you to know that UMKC students report STRESS as the top impediment to their academic success – and stress, in turn, is related to a number of mental health concerns that are commonly faced by college students, including depression, anxiety, loss of sleep, and more.

Study Tip: Approaching Your Professors

By , September 28, 2010 9:07 am

(This study tip has been provided by Dr. Richard Delaware. He is a professor in the math department and has been with the University since 1984. His understanding of student-professor relationships can benefit you tremendously!)

Visit Your Instructor’s Office

Do it! And not just on days right before tests. Go to your instructor’s office for the first time no later than the second week of class. We can give you personal attention you can get in no other way, and heck, you’re paying for it. We enjoy talking to students, and the hours we post as “office hours” are exactly those times we are ready for you. If it happens that our posted office hours do not match your free times, talk to us! That’s why we all include the “and by appointment” option on our syllabi – so we can adapt to the many different schedules of our students, meaning you.

Balancing Life and School Seminar

By , September 28, 2010 9:07 am

This week’s Academic Success Seminar will help students articulate  priorities in regards to school, work, and family.   Academics are important, however, academics often are not the only priority for a student.  There are many other aspects of a student’s life that affect academics.

This seminar will help you not only articulate your priorities but to find a fair balance to manage everything on your plate.  You will learn about tools to help you control your schedule rather than letting your schedule control you, as well as resources to ask for assistance rather than waiting until it is too late and the stress has already begun.

  • Tuesday @ Noon; Multicultural Student Affairs Office, 3rd Floor Student Union
  • Wednesday @ 3pm; Oak Street Residence Hall Classroom
  • Thursday @ 5:30pm; Oak Street Residence Hall Classroom

For more information or a schedule of seminars for the rest of the semester, visit their website or the seminar schedule page.
