UMKC Friends of the Library Annual Scholarship Contest

Submit your 500-1000 word original piece written in response to the statement “How UMKC’s libraries focus on my success” for a chance to earn a $500 scholarship.

Applications should be submitted electronically via e-mail to fol@umkc.edu  no later than March 28, 2011. The subject should be “2011 Scholarship Application” and the body should include the following student information: name, student ID#, e-mail address, street address, phone number, degree program being sought, UMKC department and school, current level/year, and expected graduation date.

Award is available to degree seeking students of any level from any school or discipline, with preference given to those with a cumulative gpa of 3.0 or higher. Applicants are advised that all materials become the property of the Friends upon submittal and may be used in promoting UMKC Libraries. Winner to be announced April 19, 2011 at the Friends of the Library Annual Celebration.

SEARCH Symposium Registration Now Open

The 11th Annual SEARCH (Students Engaged in Artistic and Academic Research) Undergraduate Research Symposium is coming up on Friday, April 15 in Pierson Auditorium.

Registration for the Symposium is due by 5:00 p.m., Monday, March 21. Registration materials, including an abstract, are available on the SEARCH website

At the April Symposium, a wide variety of oral and poster presentations, displays and performances will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. An awards ceremony recognizing the best presentations will take place from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The event is free and open to all.

Study Tip: Using Music to Succeed

As an undergraduate, every study session I attended with my friends included music.  That statement probably does not seem so strange considering that I was a music major and was often studying for music history tests where we were required to “name that tune” when the professor played a random selection of music on a test.  But even when we got together to learn the names of the nations in Africa or the progression of the Vietnam War or even physics formulas, music was playing.  Today, in our world of digital media permeating every waking moment, music is even more omnipresent in our lives and in our studying.
