Stay Fit and Healthy

By , October 30, 2012 8:30 am

Being in college can make staying healthy difficult–with so much going on and never enough hours in the day, it’s easy to slip into a routine of fast food, late night pizza, and exercise only when walking to class.  However, eating right and exercising regularly helps keep you mentally and physically fit–which is what you need to be in order to fight off seasonal flu as well as stay alert in class and while studying.

Basic health tips include washing your hands, covering your cough or sneeze, and eating healthy, nutritious food.  Here are some simple tips to healthy eating even on a college student’s budget and schedule:

  1. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables – Buying produce that is in season saves time at the grocery store- it’s always right up front! Buy already washed and cut veggies, such as baby carrots or sugar snap peas, or easy-to-eat fruit for great take-along snacks!
  2. Drink water – water is really good for you – and it’s so much cheaper to fill your water bottle than to go keep going to the vending machine or convenience store to buy a soda or energy drink. Using a reusable water bottle also helps you go green!
  3. Prepare your own food – You are in control of what goes into your meals if you prepare them. Plan your menus for the week and go shopping once. Going with a list helps keep you on-track health wise and budget-wise!

To go with your health-kick, don’t forget to find time to work out!  All students are members of Swinney Recreation Center.  It’s also conveniently located–and there is an annex at Hospital Hill–so there is no excuse that you just can’t make it to the gym.  Swimming, biking, or a heart-pumping cardio class can really help reduce your stress and kick-start your day!

There are also many different exercises you can do with little or no equipment.  This includes some cardio (like running the stairs) but also core-strengthening exercises. It is also helpful if you take a few extra minutes in the morning and throughout the day to stretch. It doesn’t take long, and you’ll feel more relaxed and focused.

Whenever and however you exercise  you’ll do your body–and your mind–a world of good!
