Student Athlete Advisory Committee Spotlight
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) consist of twenty-five student-athletes who meet every three weeks to discuss a variety of issues. The SGA recognized group consists of representative from each athletic team and they serve as liaisons and leaders. They spend time discussing community service, campus engagement, diversity projects and issues facing student-athletes. UMKC’s SAAC operates under the Division I mission statement “to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.”
Currently, SAAC is lead by Volleyball student-athlete Holly Schmidt. She has committed SAAC over the past two year to dedicate its time to community outreach and campus engagement. Throughout the 2010-11 academic year SAAC has participated in many events, giving back to the vibrant UMKC campus and surrounding community. In the fall SAAC was involved in UMKC’s Move-In Day, Walk-A-Mile in Her Shoes, College Colors Day, the Pride and Freedom Breakfasts, and crafted holiday cards for the elderly. In the spring, SAAC collected over 8,000 pounds of food for Harvesters, participated in Samaritans Feet and Coaches vs. Cancer, served pizzas to 3,000 area Boy Scouts at Municipal Arena, and just this past Friday they took part in Relay for Life. SAAC partnered with other student groups on campus, from both UMKC and Rockhurst, to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society. SAAC is also continuing to work on a new initiative – Blue and Gold Games. In its second year, the Blue and Gold Games are an opportunity for student-athletes to support student-athletes. SAAC will end off the 2010-11 academic year by hosting the second annual Rock’n Roo Talent Show on Tuesday, April 26, the talent show displays the creative talent of our student-athletes while raising awareness for local charities. The Rock’n Roo Talent Show will begin at 7pm in the new Student Union Theater – all UMKC students and staff are welcome to attend. SAAC hopes the campus community can come and enjoy and evening watching UMKC’s student-athletes other talents.
