Welcome Week 2010

Welcome Week is your introduction to UMKC.  This week is packed with tons of campus activities and events to get you ready for an amazing year.  Go Roos!

There has already been a ton of fun stuff around campus, from movie nights to community service to UnionFest and tailgating.  And there is more to come!  APC is hosting events, fraternity and sorority recruitment is coming up, and you can go chill out with the Women’s Center!  For more information and a schedule of events for the rest of the week, visit the Welcome Week web page.

Fraternity and Sorority Recruitment

[The following was provided by Fraternity and Sorority Affairs in the Office of Student Involvement.]

Come out and meet UMKC’s social fraternities and sororities on Monday, August 23rd starting with pizza at 6:30 pm in the University Playhouse and moving at 7:30 pm into the Student Union for Q&A.  This is a great time to begin meeting all our chapters.

UMKC is home to three governing councils, each with their own unique way of recruiting new members to join the organizations.  Below is a little about each of the councils:  the Interfraternity Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the PanHellenic Council.

Study Tip: Using a Syllabus to Your Advantage

[This post is by our special guest Dr. Marilyn Yoder.  As a professor in the School of Biological Sciences, she teaches general biology as well as leads research courses.  Her insights into utilizing a syllabus are important to academic success, no matter your year or area of study.]

A dictionary definition of “syllabus” is rather simple – it is an outline of a course including a list of topics.  In reality, it has evolved into a much more complex document including policies, campus resources relevant to the course, and class websites.  Used simply, a syllabus is a time management tool. If you are savvy about using your syllabus, it can reduce stress and minimize miscommunication with your instructor.
