Campus safety is everyone’s responsibility. If you are walking on campus, be aware of your surroundings at all times. Be careful when crossing streets, even if you are crossing in a crosswalk. Be aware when texting or surfing on your iPhone. Try not to assume that the car will stop for you– remember they are bigger than you are!
One of the most important things to remember is to secure your belongings. Lock your car and make sure all valuables are out of sight. Don’t leave your belongings unattended. If you live on campus, never leave your room unlocked–no matter how short a time period you plan on being gone.
When walking after dark, try not to walk alone–whether you are male or female. If the situation arises when you have to walk alone, call a friend and stay on the phone with them until you get to safety. Keep in mind where all of the blue safety phones are on campus and on your route. Also, know the phone number for the UMKC Campus Police should you not be able to get to a blue security phone (235-1515). It would be best to program it into your speed dial so you don’t have to worry about finding the number in your contacts list.
Check out these safety tips for more information. Take these precautions and your time spent at UMKC should be safe and enjoyable!
