UMKC Civil Engineers awarded Distinguished Chapter
The student chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering has been awarded the Distinguished Chapter Award for region 7, the highest award given to a student chapter.
“The distinguished chapter award means we were the best, irrespective of size, and this is the first time we have won,” said John T. Kevern, Ph.D., associate professor of civil engineering. “The students have really taken this seriously.” UMKC’s student chapter has a track record of winning awards, having received honorable mentions the last few years.
The ASCE student chapter helped organize dozens of unique activities, ranging from a charity golf tournament to highway cleanups. They also held several joint meetings with the local ASCE section and Geotech committee; and have had an integral role in planning the annual ASCE-AISC National Student Steel Bridge Competition, which will be May 22-23 at the Kansas City Convention Center.
Region 7 includes Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and the St. Louis and Kansas City areas of Missouri.
