If you haven’t been there yet, Swinney Recreation Center helps you stay in shape for “free” during the semester!  The membership fee is automatically covered in your student fees, so all you have to do is show up with your student id card!  Once inside, you can shoot hoops on one of 5 basketball courts or play racquetball.  You can also do a cardio-workout in the fitness center, take a jog on the indoor or outdoor track, a swim in the pool, take an aerobics class, join an Intramural sports league, participate in the Student Personal Fitness Challenge, or get help from Swinney Rec’s fitness staff!  (The personal training does require an additional fee, which is outlined on their website.)  To help plan your workout, check out their series of fitness equipment instructional videos.  Become a fan on Facebook for all the latest updates!

If you’re looking for a challenge, the Student Personal Fitness Challenge class offered at Swinney Recreation Center beginning in January 2011 is for you!  The challenge: commit to exercising with the SRC Aerobics team twice a week for six weeks; complete a Bod Pod body composition assessment at the beginning and end of the six weeks.  The reward: upon successful completion of the challenge, UMKC students will get a full refund of the program fee ($30).  Keep your eyes open for more information in December.

If you’re looking for something more-team oriented, take a look at the intramural program!  (and check out the highlight clips video!)   Playing an intramural sport can not only be fun, but it is a great way to meet new friends on campus, to divert your attention from the pressures of the classroom, and to help keep the freshman 15 off your body.  The National Intramurals Recreation Sports Association conducted a study on the value of intramural programs on the college campus and found that students involved in campus recreation, combined with a balanced schedule, showed greater alertness in classes and enjoyment of their college experience.  Some of the diverse programs offered here at UMKC include flag football (which currently includes over 400 participants), volleyball, basketball, tennis, ultimate Frisbee, soccer, kickball, and softball.  We have championship t-shirts that show you have won a league or tournament championship–these shirts are highly sought after on campus!  If you would like to be a part of this great program please call us at 816-235-2712.
