Meet NBA Coach Mike Woodson at UMKC

By , September 9, 2013 5:24 pm

Mike WoodsonWhat can an NBA coach share with college students?  He can share what it takes to succeed – the grit and determination to get through challenges, on and off the court.

The New York Knicks Coach Mike Woodson will be on campus as a special guest of the UMKC Men of Color Campus Initiative on Friday, September 13th at the Student Union Theatre from 3-5pm.

During the “Behind the Scenes: Legacy in the Making” event, Woodson will spend his time answering questions from those attending the event, which is open to all students and the community.

“Coach Woodson is a trailblazer not only in the NBA, but also in the world of business,” said Rodney Smith, Assistant Director of Academic Support and Mentoring and facilitator for the event. “Hearing his unique perspective, I think our students will be amazed – as well as inspired – by his accomplishments both on the court and off.”

Woodson served as Knicks’ interim coach for two months prior to being hired as head coach in May 2012. He has had a successful career in basketball, beginning with his days at Indiana University under coach Bob Knight where he was a two-time All-American, averaging 19.8 points in 104 career games with the Hoosiers.

His impressive career spans more than 30 years. Woodson played in the NBA for 11 years, including playing more than 786 games for the Knicks, New Jersey and Kansas City/Sacramento (1981-82 through 1985-86 seasons), LA Clippers, Houston and Cleveland. He was head coach of the Atlanta Hawks for six years, and assistant coach with Milwaukee, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Detroit.  While assistant coach with the Pistons, he was one of the chief architects behind Detroit’s suffocating defense that helped the Pistons to the 2004 NBA Title.

New RooWriter Website Launched

By , September 9, 2013 5:11 pm

RooWriterThe new online RooWriter Writing Assessment makes it easy for you to get advice about improving your writing, meet prerequisites, and fulfill a graduation requirement.  This fall, the RooWriter replaces the Written English Proficiency Test (WEPT) for all undergraduates at UMKC.  Unlike the WEPT, the RooWriter is not a pass/fail test on one topic that must be written in person in three hours at two designated times during the semester. In contrast, the RooWriter allows you to write a 750-1,500 word essay on your choice of six topics in a 72-hour-period anytime and anywhere you have access to a computer and the Internet.  After you submit your essay, it will be assessed by two trained evaluators and you will receive a report of their responses and a copy of your essay through the online system.

Everything that you need to know and do is located in one user-friendly web site: https://www.umkc.edu/roowriter/.  At the RooWriter web site, you can read the essay guidelines and expectations, and preview the six Reading Packets to decide which one you want to write about.  The current Reading Packets address topics ranging from distracted driving to the impact of digital piracy to homelessness in Kansas City.  When you begin writing your online essay, you will choose your Reading Packet, and you will be assigned a prompt or question to respond to.  You then will have 72 hours to complete your essay, which means you can work on it, return to it, and get help from the Writing Studio.  After you submit your essay, two evaluators will assess it in six areas, such as the area of “point-purpose-idea,” or the area of “support, evidence, citations.”  Evaluators also will provide comments about the strengths of your essay and aspects of your writing that you should concentrate on in the future.

To help you develop your writing and reading skills, you are encouraged to take the RooWriter Writing Assessment more than once during your UMKC undergraduate career.  The RooWriter is a requirement for graduation, and to fulfill that requirement, you should take the RooWriter after you have completed Discourse II or its equivalent and before you have earned 90 hours of undergraduate credit.  It also is required for Writing-Intensive classes and may be required for other classes.  The first time that you use the RooWriter Writing Assessment, your student account will be billed $5, but you will not have to pay for subsequent assessments.  For more information, see the RooWriter web site or contact the Coordinator of Writing Assessment at roowriter@umkc.edu.
