Changes to the Student Standard of Conduct

By , September 4, 2012 9:28 am

The four University of Missouri campuses recommended changes to the Student Standard of Conduct and the Rules of Procedures in Student Conduct Matters that were approved by the University of Missouri Board of Curators in July. These changes are to comply with the recently updated U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights (OCR) Title IX standards for institutions of higher education regarding the handling of complaints of sexual harassment and sexual violence as well as to be more student-friendly and bring greater consistency to the process.

The Student Standard of Conduct outlines the minimal expectations of behavior for students of the University of Missouri. Modifications to the Standard of Conduct include specific identification of prohibited behaviors rather than relying on broad, generalized prohibitions. Amended standards pertain to threats of violence, nonconsensual sexual behavior, stalking, harassment, invasion of privacy, and participation in theft.

The Rules of Procedures in Student Conduct Matters have been amended to provide a complainant in nonconsensual sexual behavior cases with equal rights and opportunities to present and question witnesses, appeal the Student Conduct Committee’s decision and to require individuals appealing any decision to specify reasons in detail. Evidentiary standards have been explicitly stated as a preponderance of the evidence (more likely than not) standard rather than being implied.

The amended policy and procedures are available online in the University of Missouri Collected Rules and Regulations:

One Night Only — Stand-Up Economist

By , September 4, 2012 9:28 am

Yoram Bauman isn’t a typical stand-up comedian. Then again, he isn’t a typical economist, either. For years, Bauman has taken his unique blend of economics-based comedy everywhere from Time Magazine to PBS. And now, he’ll take it to UMKC!

The Department of Economics invites you to see “the world’s first and only stand-up economist” at 7 p.m. on September 10th in the Student Union Theater.  Student tickets are free, but please reserve a ticket.

Bauman’s unusual blend of stand-up comedy and economics is befitting for the UMKC Department of Economics, which is internationally-recognized for its own unique approach to economics. The department has a history of going against traditional approaches to economic theory in favor of Modern Money Theory. As a result, UMKC economics professors correctly predicted the U.S. housing market crash, the recession, and the Eurozone debt crisis.

Stephanie Kelton, associate professor and chair of the department of economics, hopes that the Stand-up Economist event will bring together not just the area’s economists, but people who have a more casual interest in the economy.

“Yoram is well-known for putting a fresh, funny spin on economic theories and principles. We hope you will join us, learn a little more about our ground-breaking department, and share a few laughs,” Kelton said.
