Out of the Darkness Campus Walk- Volunteers Needed!
The first ever UMKC Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is Saturday, April 14th, 2012 from 11am-1pm. Registration is at 10 am. It will start at the University Center walkway.
In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 15 minutes, claiming more than 36,000 lives each year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students, and the third for youth ages 15-24, with adolescent depression -undiagnosed, untreated or both- as the number one cause.
The Out of the Darkness Campus Walks are 3-5 mile walks taking place in communities across the country, with the proceeds benefitting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). By walking in the Out of the Darkness Campus Walks, you will be walking with thousands of students nationwide to raise money for AFSP’s vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide and provide support for survivors of suicide loss. In deciding to walk you are taking us a step closer to making suicide prevention a national priority.
We need help planning it. Meetings will be bi-weekly in the union. E-mail Emily Lundberg or check out the Facebook page if there are any questions. The Facebook page is: UMKC Out of the Darkness Campus Walk. Create a team or walk individually. If you raise over $100, you will get a free t-shirt!
UMKC selected among “Princeton Review Best Value Colleges for 2012”
[The following was provided by UMKC Office of Public Relations.]
On Feb. 7, the Princeton Review announced its “Best Value Colleges for 2012.” UMKC is one of 150 institutions chosen by the Review. The list features 75 public and 75 private colleges and universities.
Visit the Princeton Review website for a report on the list and information about the schools. Background about the Princeton Review list can also be found at the USA TODAY website. Users can click on an exclusive interactive map and access a database with stats and facts about each of the colleges, plus a report on why the Princeton Review named it a “Best Value.”
The Princeton Review selected the 150 institutions as “best value” choices for 2012 based on surveys of administrators and students at 650 colleges and universities. The selection criteria covered more than 30 factors in three areas: academics, cost of attendance, and financial aid. Cost and financial aid data came from Princeton Review’s fall 2011 surveys of school administrators. Data on academics came from our fall 2010 through fall 2011 surveys of school administrators. Selection was also based on data from the Review’s surveys of students attending the schools who shared assessments of their professors and their satisfaction with their financial aid awards.
