Thoughts From a Distance Education Student

[This entry has been provided by Debi Rosenberg, who is a PhD candidate from UMKC’s School of Nursing. She lives in upstate New York and attends UMKC via the distance learning degree program.]

I am a 50 year old mother of a college freshman and a high school senior and I live in the northern suburbs of New York City.  When new acquaintances ask me what I do for a living, I respond that I am a pediatric nurse practitioner currently working toward a PhD in nursing.  “Oh, at Columbia University?   N.Y.U.?”  “No,” I reply.   “Actually, I attend the University of Missouri-Kansas City.”  Jaws drop.

Writing College Essays and Papers Seminar

Do you have trouble finding out how to begin writing essays or papers for class? This seminar is designed to help students become aware of pre-writing methods in order to find the one most suited for them. Also, students will also learn of different databases that are subject-specific and of materials available to them through the UMKC library in order to find sources to write papers and other class assignments. We will also learn together, how to navigate the library website in order to utilize available databases.

Seminars will take place:
• Tuesday, Feb 22 – Noon-1, SASS Room 213
• Wednesday, Feb 23 – 3-4, SASS Room 213
• Thursday, Feb 24 – 5:30-6:30, Student Union, Multicultural Student Affairs Suite

Coaching Program Needs Volunteers!

Are you interested in being a peer mentor and working with fellow UMKC students? UMKC’s Coaching Program is looking for students who have a positive attitude about college and have the ability to motivate other students to be successful as a UMKC student. The Coaching Program will be holding Information Sessions for students who are interested in applying for the volunteer position as a Peer Coach for Fall 2011. Circle Mirror Transformation- KC Rep
