Congratulations to UMKC students Purna Biswa, Hang Summers, and Evgeniya Zvigunova–their video beat out thousands of entries in UMB’s “More Than” video contest in honor of their 100th anniversary. The theme of the video is “Inspired to Make a Difference.”
Purna and Hang are both sophomores majoring in Computer Science and both from the Kansas City metropolitan area. Evgeniya is originally from Russia, and while at UMKC she was a Performance major (piano) and Computer Science minor. Read more.

I am writing today to let you know about an initiative I have started to establish a new student organization specifically for non-traditional students. This is for anyone, particularly those entering or re-entering college later in life. We welcome all – even those in college just a few years past the ‘norm’! It’s also for anyone who has concerns or challenges in college that may be described as “non-traditional.”
I decided to follow through on this because of some decidedly different experiences and perspectives I have encountered as a student returning to UMKC after life interfered with my original goals. There are many of us who fit this description and just as many challenges that are unique and need a safe place to be discussed, considered or overcome. Since sharing my idea with several of you, I’m encouraged and excited about this opportunity for us to help UMKC’s non-traditional student body – present and future!
I have the application prepared and signatures required for submission. The next step is the development of a constitution fro the organization. This must be done by the group, not by one person. The group will be called the OAKS and stands for the “Organization of Adult Knowledge Seekers.” I chose this after visiting with a very dedicated and supportive UMKC professor. The name is also reflective of a favorite book of mine called ‘Grow Deep, not Just Tall’ by Karen Kaiser Clark. The symbol of the strength of the oak tree that helps it withstand time and storms, is that its roots are deep in the earth… the same strength our knowledge and experiences offer in life – if we truly learn!

Students from Four Schools to Compete in Fundraiser
The first “Rx Factor” pits each of the four Hospital Hill schools against each other in a friendly fundraising competition.
Will it be the School of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Health Studies or Pharmacy that earns bragging rights?
“Rx Factor” will be held 7 p.m. April 26 in the UMKC Student Union Theater. Deans from the Hospital Hill schools will judge contestants based on their scrubs fashion, talent, Q & A and mystery factor in a faux Miss America-style pageant.
The event is $10.50 per student; $20.50 for non-students.
Three-fourths of the proceeds are going to support a UMKC pharmacy student undergoing cancer treatments; 25 percent will be split between the top two contestants to go to philanthropies of their choice. Kappa Epsilon, a professional fraternity at the UMKC School of Pharmacy, is organizing the event.
