Communities Creating Opportunity (CCO) Community Organizing Internship 2018

General Overview
The Communities Creating Opportunity Internship Program is designed to provide interested students/volunteers with a solid grounding in our work to advance a dignity agenda on behalf of families across the states of Missouri and Kansas. More specifically, students will get the opportunity to apply their current skills and interests towards advocating for transformative social change within one of our core issues outlined below:
Communications interns will serve as an integrated part of our communications team – you will be doing real work that matters. CCO will work with successful applicants to design an internship tailored to your interests and skills. Most internships will be based out of our main office in Kansas City, but some may be work-from-home optional.
Potential Duties:
• Press outreach and management
• Design and create online outreach materials
• Create and curate content on social media platforms to strengthen our online presence
• Assist with the expansion of communications infrastructure
• Help to implement our story gathering program
• Produce written, audio, or video stories on community members or volunteer leaders
• Design materials for community organizers
• Engage the artistic community in Kansas City to create art with social justice themes
• Help to arrange trainings with artists and community members
• Event production

Qualifications:
• Dedicated commitment to social justice and racial equity priorities
• Excellent command of the English language
• Strong writing skills
• Reliability
• Eagerness to learn and the ability to juggle multiple projects on tight deadlines

Nice to haves:
• Prior communications or volunteering experience
• HTML skills
• Photoshop
• Video editing
• Graphic design skills
• Spanish or other second language skills

Qualification Summary: High School diploma required. Must be a graduate or currently matriculating student at an accredited college or university.
Specific Accountabilities
• Collaborate with CCO staff and leaders to develop a power and political analysis for advancing legislative policy around core CCO issues (e.g. Medicaid expansion, minimum wage ordinances).
• Contribute to the development of a political and legislative advocacy toolkit to train clergy and lay leaders on civic participation.
• Contribute a minimum 150 per semester and/or 300 hours for a summer (negotiated based on program
• Be in regular attendance and on time for appointments
• Notify staff mentor when an absence is anticipated
• Participate in activities designed to improve knowledge

• Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands while demonstrating a high level of responsiveness
