Intern, Interpretation Paid Internship Summer 2018

Interpretive Planners are members of the Education and Interpretation Division. They work alongside curatorial and design staff to plan for special exhibitions or installations. Their primary focus is on framing the conceptual narrative of exhibitions, writing and/or editing gallery text (text panels, labels, etc.), and planning digital or analog interactives. While Interpretive Planners may help plan gallery activities, they do not directly teach workshops, give tours, or plan public programs. Schedule Approximately 15 hours each week. The hours are to occur sometime during the regularly scheduled office hours, Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some evening or weekend hours may occasionally be requested. This schedule is flexible and the amount of hours per week depends upon work load and the intern’s schedule. Stipend The intern will receive a $1,000 stipend as payment for their work. The stipend will be distributed in 2 parts: $500 after 5 weeks of work and $500 after successfully completing the internship. Responsibilities Provide support to the museum’s Interpretation department by assisting with varied tasks including:

  • Helping with the planning of gallery interpretive materials, both analog and digital
  • Writing, editing and revising text
  • Providing support for gallery installations and exhibitions, including research and evaluation.
  • Additional projects as assigned The Interpretation department recognizes the importance of learning on-the-job during an internship. Efforts will be made to include intern in relevant meetings, etc. Education & Requirements
  • Students must be enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Museum Studies, Studio Art, Art History, Education, or similar discipline; or accepted to a program for the following academic year at the time of application.
  • Interest in museum education and interpretation.
  • Ability to follow through and complete projects independently.
  • Strong computer literacy, attention to detail, and organization.
  • Ability to work in an active office environment and apply strong interpersonal skills. Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Previous experience working in a museum or informal learning environment is a plus
