Various Communication and Advertising Internships: International Relationships Council

If you are a current undergraduate or graduate student who is passionate about understanding the world and contributing to meaningful local conversations that bring a global perspective to our community, we’d love to talk with you! The IRC may have an internship available that will give you valuable experience in the nonprofit sector, supplement your studies, and put your professional skills to use.
The IRC, a 60-year-old nonprofit organization, leads conversations around foreign affairs, global issues, and international relations and their connection to the local community. We work in partnership with businesses, universities, community organizations, and K-12 schools to bring a global perspective to Kansas City.
Location: The IRC’s offices are located in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. While some internships may require the student to be present at the IRC’s offices for the majority of their time, many interns will be able to work remotely. We will decide on the best approach as the internship gets underway.
Time Commitment: 10-15 hours per week with a consistent schedule to be identified with the student
Compensation: Our internships are unpaid positions; however, we are happy to work with your school to help you receive academic credit for your internship.

Timeline (for summer and fall 2018 internships):
• Mid-February – positions posted
• Friday, March 16 – applications due
• March 19 to 23 – interviews
• May through August – summer internship
• August through December – fall internship
Available positions include internships in audio & video production, communications, community, digital resources, events, global education, marketing, membership, programs, and social media/web. AUDIO & VIDEO PRODUCTION INTERN For many years, the bulk of the IRC’s programs have been live and in person. The audio & video production intern will help us strategize and implement ways to make these programs available to a larger audience through visual and audio technology. Prior experience in video and/or audio production (including films, radio, television, podcasts, etc.) is required. With your application, please submit two samples of your audio or video work.
COMMUNICATIONS INTERN Communications are key to the success of any nonprofit organization and are particularly important for building the community of a membership organization. The communications intern will help to map a communications strategy for the IRC, contribute to the organization’s weekly newsletter, and develop and implement communications plans. Prior experience with e-mail systems (Exact Target, MailChimp, Constant Contact, etc.) preferred. With your application, please send a writing sample of no more than 500 words.
COMMUNITY INTERN The Kansas City community has an incredible array of businesses, organizations, and K-12 and university programs that focus on international topics. The primary work of the community intern will be to catalogue and connect with a wide range of internationally oriented organizations and groups in Kansas City as a resource for the community. Significant familiarity with the greater Kansas City community is an important qualification for this internship.
DIGITAL RESOURCES INTERN The digital resources intern strategizes and executes development of existing and new online engagement opportunities for the IRC community, including the speakers bureau, volunteer center, online resources, and IRC archives. Previous experience with website maintenance is helpful, though not required, for this internship. Students of nonprofit management, public administration, or a related field are encouraged to apply.
EVENTS INTERN The IRC regularly hosts and partners to present a variety of events ranging from lectures and panel discussions to special events with academics, diplomats, journalists, and interested community members. The events intern will help to coordinate logistics, registration, and execution of IRC events. Previous experience in planning and carrying out events of a variety of sizes and types a plus, but all applications should be detail-oriented and organized.
GLOBAL EDUCATION INTERN The IRC works with a variety of area K-12 schools to put on Academic WorldQuest, a spring Quiz Bowl–style program on international topics. We are also looking to restart a number of other K-12 initiatives with local schools. The global education intern will support these projects. Education majors and teachers-in-training will be given preference for this internship.
MARKETING INTERN Nonprofit organizations rely on consistent brand identity and the creation of collateral materials that further the reach of that brand. The marketing intern will evaluate the IRC’s current brand identity and create materials to share about our work with the general public. Graphic-design skills and abilities with Adobe Creative Suite are required for this internship. Applicants should provide a link to a portfolio of their design work.
MEMBERSHIP INTERN As a membership organization, the IRC works with area businesses, universities, organizations, K-12 schools, and other interested individuals. The membership intern will scrub and analyze our member database and create processes for member recruitment, maintenance, and renewal. Prior experience with databases (Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, or others) preferred.
PROGRAMS INTERN The IRC is always looking to offer the most relevant set of programs to our members in Kansas City. The programs intern will map the IRC’s current programs, conduct research to identify program possibilities, and make recommendations for the organization’s programs going forward. Students of nonprofit management, public administration, or a related field will be given preference for this internship.
SOCIAL MEDIA/WEB INTERN Nonprofit organizations use social media and web platforms to share about who we are, advance our mission, and foster community engagement. The social media/web intern will identify the IRC’s current online presence, develop a social-media and website strategy for the organization, and schedule content to keep our online presence up to date. Applicants should submit creative ideas for three posts that would be well-received on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
