First Impressions – Biking on campus

Biking on and around the UMKC campus showed me the opportunities and the challenges that the cyclists may face. Using a bike to move around campus made me feel like I am close to some places that I used to feel it is far away to walk to. Also, this experience gave me a sense of the campus topography and it gave me a closer look to the campus features. The campus topography was challenging a little bit for me on some areas on campus, as an example, it was hard to ride the bike on Cherry St while going up the hill.

On the other hand, I felt that it was not very safe to ride the bike on the street because of the traffic. while rush hours, the streets on campus, like Rockhill Rd, are very busy and it didn’t feel safe to ride on the street at that time. Also, riding the bike on the sidewalk felt like it was obstructing the pedestrian move and it was not very comfortable for students who was moving around campus budlings.

Overall, the experience of trying bike share on campus was great and it made me understand the campus features more, but at the same time, I didn’t feel safe enough to ride a bike on campus. Providing bike lanes on campus would make it much easier for students or cyclists to move around campus with their bikes. Also, reducing the speed on Rockhill Rd would help to reduce the traffic and it would make it safer to ride on the street.
