Street Elements: Signage

The Diagram above displays a couple selections of signage along the Main Street corridor within the sample frame of 50th Street and 30th Street. They tell a lot about the character of the corridor through design, architectural incorporation, text font, scale and placement in relationship to buildings and the street.

Examining some of the existing signage along Main Street, we can compare and contrast some of their elements. In doing this we can actually categorize them into separate categories; Attached, Independent Structures, Navigational Markers, and Billboards. Analyzing how each category interacts with the streetscape on a pedestrian  level, we can start to visualize which signs are effective in adding positive character and identity, and which signs aren’t.  In the diagram above, you can see the breakdown of these elements.

In the diagram above, you can see each category of sign previously described pinpointed in a position  along Main Street where that particular type of sign is common. This also shows you how they are spatially organized. In conclusion, the more suburban scale signage is located further south down Main Street and the more urban scale signage is located further north. This reflects the density along Main Street as typically, more urban scale development is established north and there is more suburban scale development further south. And finally from this, you can make a connection between streetscapes and how elements like signage reflect  and add to the character of its surroundings.
