First Impressions Biking On Campus

My first impressions of biking around campus were interesting. Keeping the campus’s elevations in mind while biking you always have to make sure to go around or take the long way so that you’re not forced to bike up a steep hill. I started by taking the bike from the Whole Foods bike rack, then riding the bike through the Trolley Track Trail all the way to the heart of campus to avoid the huge staircase from Oak St leading up to the student union. Then getting up towards 51st St it was a very comfortable ride because there are safe crosswalks, wide sidewalks, as well as having easy access to both quads (Haag hall and royal hall) and (Swinney gym and Miller Nichols Library).

Although getting to Rockhill road it felt very busy and unsafe for me to be riding a bike there. There is a pedestrian crosswalk and stop light but it’s sort of elevated and the sidewalks are so tiny you feel like you could fall off to the street. Overall, Bike riding around campus is easy but when you decide to leave campus from Rockhill road towards the plaza, as a bike rider that’s not used to biking on busy roads you can’t really feel comfortable. There are bike lanes going up towards The South Plaza and Nelson Atkins Museum but they cut off when you get to certain intersections.

I believe that biking on campus is good but there is room for improvement. Things as simple as using bright visible colors for bike lanes, making bike lanes wider and separate than sidewalks, and putting up signs to show bike riders the easiest route to their destination.
