divergent books“UMKC Women’s Center and UMKC Libraries invite your participation in a facilitated discussion of the ‘Divergent’ trilogy by Veronica Roth.

Divergent Trilogy Book Discussion
Wednesday, Nov. 13
12:00 pm
Miller Nichols Library
Room 303

The books: ‘Divergent,’ ‘Insurgent,’ and the recently-released ‘Allegiant,’ follow the coming-of-age of Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior. In this near-future dystopian society (played out in an antecedent, decaying infrastructure that appears to be Chicago), children take an Aptitude Test at age 16, and thereafter dedicate their lives to one of the society’s factions: Amity, Erudite, Candor, Abnegation, or Dauntless. At the point you choose your Faction, you are cut off from your previous friends and family: you belong to the Faction.

What Faction will Beatrice choose? What does it mean to be of a Faction? Does this social format promote a better society, or is corruption lurking under the surface?
These are great YA (young adult) novels: similar to ‘The Hunger Games’ in flavor with a different take on societies and their impact our individual choices (and freedom of choice) as we mature. Beatrice is a unique character, and her path through life will make for an excellent discussion, lead by librarian Scott Curtis.”
