Studio

The UMKC Bassoon Studio is a close-knit, supportive community of musicians who are passionate about growing as artists and performers. With 6 to 12 students—split evenly between undergrads and grads—you’ll get the benefits of a small studio: lots of one-on-one attention, strong peer connections, and meaningful performance opportunities.

What makes this studio truly special is how connected it is to the Kansas City arts scene. Students regularly perform in top venues around the city, work with local organizations, and take part in creative, outside-the-box concerts. It’s real-world experience that helps you grow as a musician—and a professional.

Reed-making is a big part of life as a bassoonist, and UMKC gives you a head start. The studio has a full set of reed tools, including high-end motorized equipment that your professor personally owns and shares. You’ll learn to make great reeds for less than $1 each—and you’ll get expert guidance from someone who has made over 15,000 reeds professionally.

If you’re interested in contrabassoon, you’re in luck. The professor performs equally on bassoon and contrabassoon and teaches both. Plus, the Conservatory has two professional-level contras that students can use—something you won’t find at many other schools.

If you’re looking for a place that blends high-level training, hands-on experience, and a strong musical community, the UMKC Bassoon Studio is the perfect place to grow.
