Life in Kansas City

Kansas City offers an ideal environment for bassoonists to thrive—both artistically and personally. With a low cost of living and a rich cultural landscape, KC stands out as one of the few mid-size cities in the U.S. to boast a full symphony orchestra, opera company, ballet, professional theatre, and musical theatre company. Bassoon students at UMKC benefit from direct access to this vibrant arts scene, along with world-class museums like the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the National World War I Memorial.

The city itself provides an exceptional environment for bassoonists. Many of UMKC’s bassoon students have been placed on the substitute list for the Kansas City Symphony—one of the top 25 orchestras in the country. These students gain invaluable professional experience performing in both pops and subscription concerts. In addition, the bassoon studio benefits from a steady stream of freelance and gig opportunities, helping students build strong résumés and professional networks while still in school.

Located in Midtown just blocks from the iconic Country Club Plaza, the UMKC Volker campus places students in the heart of the action—just minutes from downtown and immersed in a city that truly supports the arts. Whether performing, studying, or collaborating, bassoonists in Kansas City find endless inspiration and opportunity.
