FFNHA Paid Summer Youth Camp Internship

Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area (FFNHA) is looking for a Summer Youth Camp Intern. The Summer Youth Camp Intern is responsible for assisting in the organization of the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area and Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site Summer Youth Camp. The Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area Youth Camp is for 4th and 5th grade students from local Boys and Girls Clubs. These camps provide an opportunity to explore the themes of: Shaping the Frontier, the Missouri Kansas Border War, and the Enduring Struggle for Freedom through experiencing the cultural, natural, and historical resources in Freedom’s Frontier’s 41 counties in eastern Kansas and western Missouri. Freedom’s Frontier offers this camp to Boys & Girls Club students from the region. The intern position will work with historic sites and with Brown v. Board of Education staff to help facilitate curriculum, activities, and projects for the camp. This intern position places a premium on organization, research skills, communication, teamwork, and project management. This intern will work with students.

Job Details:
The summer youth camp intern will work from the Freedom’s Frontier office in Lawrence, Kansas to plan for the summer youth camp. During camps (6 weeks over the summer) the intern will travel with students visiting various historic sites in the Kansas City, Lawrence, and Topeka area. The start date for this position is negotiable, but must begin at the latest June 1st and will continue through the end of July (possibly into August). During camp weeks, the intern must attend camp (Monday – Friday 9:00 – 4:30). Interns should be able to provide transportation.
This is a paid internship. Any mileage incurred by interns will be reimbursed.

Paid Peace Internship at American Friends Service Committee

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a non-profit Quaker-based peace and justice organization is looking for Peace Interns.

The Intern will work with AFSC staff and volunteers to support Kansas City AFSC peace campaigns and engage youth in school, faith and high school settings in creative youth peacemaking and social change activities (e.g. All of Us or None Poster Project and If I Could Change The World spoken word project). Activities will focus on: increasing activism; promoting understanding of militarism and economic injustice; exposing how corporations and the 1% control U.S. policy; and deepen advocacy and visions of a just and peaceful world.

The Peace Intern will:

  • Receive training in peacemaking, social change and conducting popular education activities;
  • Recruit and involve high school -aged youth in peace trainings, creative social change projects and peace building campaigns;
  • Help develop AFSC program materials that appeal to youth and young adults and utilize Twitter, Facebook and other social media to educate and involve youth in KC AFSC program activities;
  • Support KC AFSC peacemaking campaigns and activities

Qualifications include:

  • Being at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to engage youth from diverse groups and economic status
  • Experience in organizing projects and working collaboratively with others
  • Commitment to peace and social justice
  • Ability to utilize social media for education and organizing campaigns
  • Leadership experience, effective oral and written communication and ability to understand and accept diverse points of view
  • Flexibility required to allow for varied meeting/activity schedules

A stipend of $10/hour will be provided.

Paid Internship at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum

The Harry S. Truman Library is seeking college interns to assist with their education programs. Interns will help provide an interactive museum learning experience to third graders through an educational program at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Mo. This short term paid intern opportunity is available February – April, 2016. The interns will lead groups of 3rd grade students (8/9 yrs old) and move students to stations in the museum galleries and work with students to complete tasks in those areas. The interns will assist students in finding clues and answers within the exhibits and respond to their questions.

The interns will be paid $12.50 an hour for a minimum of 100 hours and a maximum of 125 hours during late February to mid-April 2016. The hours will be during the work week, Monday through Thursday and are approximately 9:30am – 1:30pm. The days and hours worked each week may vary.

The deadline for applications is October 30, 2015.

Interviews will be conducted in November and interns notified shortly afterwards. The internship will start in mid-February, 2016.

New Funded Internship at the Center for the History of Family Medicine

The Center for the History of Family Medicine (CHFM) is presently accepting applications for one internship position with an emphasis in the history of Family Medicine.

The position is open to all interested undergraduate and graduate students living in the Kansas City metropolitan area and surrounding communities, with preference given to students majoring in history, library or information science, historical administration or a related field. The successful applicant must complete a total of 120 hours over 8 to 12 weeks; weekly hours and scheduling are flexible. Upon successful completion of the internship, a scholarship award in the amount of $1,000.00 will be given. Paid Collections Internship at the American Royal Museum

The American Royal Museum celebrates more than 115 years of the tradition and hard work that helped build Kansas City and the West. Position Description:

This summer, the American Royal Museum is looking for one intern to assist in the digitization and cataloging of their collection. As necessary, the Collections Intern will support the American Royal Museum with other collection management projects.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Enter accession and donor information for objects in the collection not already entered into the museum’s collections management database
  • Update old records
  • Correlate all items with correct paper and database files. If these files do not already exist, create said file
  • Ensure all objects are properly marked with old and new accession numbers
  • Digitally photograph or scan each object and add images
  • Improve storage conditions where practical and note storage location for each object

Position Details:
Duration/Hours: 10 weeks; 20 hours per week; Federal holidays Pay: $2,000 stipend (before taxes) Start Date: June 1, 2015 (flexible)

Position Requirements:

Paid Summer Collections Intern at the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine

The Museum of Osteopathic Medicine and the International Center for Osteopathic History are dedicated to preserving the heritage of osteopathic medicine. Its mission is to “preserve and promote the history and tenets of osteopathy through collections and research to a global audience”. The collection of over 80,000 artifacts traces the roots of osteopathy, beginning with its founder, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, and his establishment of the first osteopathic medical school in Kirksville, Missouri to its growth into a worldwide profession.

Position Description:
Assist the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine’s Registrar with inventory and cataloging the institution’s collection. As necessary, the Collections Intern will support the Registrar with other collection management projects.

Position Responsibilities:

Paid Internship in Museum Education at Truman Museum

Third Grade Program Assistant 

Interns will help provide an interactive museum learning experience to third graders through an educational program at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Mo. This short term paid intern opportunity is available February – April, 2015.

The interns will help conduct a 3rd grade program approximately 3 hours in length. The interns will lead groups of 3rd grade students (8/9 yrs old) and move students to stations in the museum galleries and work with students to complete tasks in those areas. The interns will assist 3rd grade students in finding clues and answers within the exhibits and respond to their questions. Interns will need to keep the students on track and focused. Interns will also have to keep track of time as students will be accomplishing multiple tasks in various locations.

The interns will be paid $12.50 an hour for a minimum of 100 hours and a maximum of 125 hours during late February to mid-April 2015. The hours will be during the work week, Monday through Thursday and are approximately 9:30am – 1:30pm. The days and hours worked each week may vary.

COMMITMENT REQUIRED: A minimum commitment of two programs a week from March -April is required. Training will take place in February.

QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED:

  • Current enrollment in a 2 or 4-year degree program
  • Good organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and effectively
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Enjoy interacting and comfortable with third graders
  • Extensive prior knowledge of the Truman Presidency is not required but a working knowledge of American history and government is helpful
  • Able to accept supervision
  • Ability to speak comfortably before groups of 3rd grade students
  • Physically able to lead students around the museum

Mahaffie Farmstead Seeks Historic Site Guides

The Mahaffie Farmstead seeks to hire historic site guides for the fall season. The guidewill engage general visitors and organized tour groups in hands-on, living history activities at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site for daily programming and special events. They will also assist with preparation, planning, set-up, and take-down, of program materials for daily activities and special events and handle admissions/reception and gift shop duties.  May assist in feeding and maintaining livestock.
