About

Li-Hsin Chen joined the piano faculty at University of Missouri Kansas City, Conservatory of Music and Dance in 2018, where he teaches piano literature and applied lessons. Dr. Chen maintains an active performing career as a soloist, collaborative pianist, and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. As an enthusiastic piano teacher and former UMKC graduate teaching assistant for group piano, he enjoys placing strong emphasis on effective learning, creative practice strategies, and artistic interpretation and presentation, helping students develop their critical thinking skills, strengths, and musicianship through understanding technical aspects of playing the piano in addition to historical contexts and, through analysis, how music works.

As an international solo pianist, concerto soloist, music educator, chamber musician, and collaborative artist, Dr. Chen’s travels led him to perform and teach around the world, including in major cities such as Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Lyon, Rome, Berlin, Munich, Barcelona, Madrid, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, and Tokyo. In addition, he was invited to participate in many music festivals and master classes, working with renowned musicians, such as Alfred Brendel, András Schiff, Leon Fleisher, Pavel Gililov, Hung-Kuan Chen, Yo Yo Ma, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and Jonathan Biss. His accomplishments include performing with orchestras and winning awards and recognition in competitions around the globe.

Dr. Chen holds his Doctoral of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from UMKC, both music degrees in piano performance with Distinctions from Germany (a Concert Soloist degree from the Nürnberg Music Conservatory and MM degree from the Karlsruhe Music Conservatory), and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Taipei National University of the Arts in Taiwan.
