Group Classes

The Academy will have the below classes available for the Spring 2023 Semester. All classes will meet weekly for 45-50 minutes and begin on Saturday, January 21. Please click on the title of each class to see scheduled meeting times, instructor information, and to sign up!

Early Childhood Ages 0-3

Description: The Baby & Me music program is a comprehensive developmental program for typically developing children and children at risk for developmental delays, ages 6 months to 3 years. Led by a board-certified music therapist, parents/caregivers will not only bond with their little ones, but will learn how to help their young child reach physical, communication, social, and cognitive goals through fun, interactive songs and materials that are found around the house – no instruments needed!

Prerequisites: None

Needed Materials: None

Ages 3-12

Group Piano (ages 3-9)

Description: Group Piano Classes emphasize age-appropriate piano instruction with general musicianship activities to promote overall musical development. Skills taught include listening, singing, rhythm, large and small motor movements, keyboard technique and performance, and music appreciation. Students will play the piano individually and in groups. Parental participation and having a piano or keyboard at home is recommended.

All classes below are designed for beginner students. If your child has 3-12 months experience, please contact the Academy office to have them placed in a more advanced class or private lessons

Prerequisites: None

Needed Materials: All required books will be provided at the first class. 

Meeting Time: Saturdays, 10:00am – 10:45am

Prerequisites: 6-year-old students can start at this level without any background. 5 year olds can enroll with completion of at least one semester of Pre-Piano or previous private lessons.

Group Strings (ages 6-9) (not offered Spring 2023)

Description: Group Strings is designed to experience strings as social instruments, developing interpersonal social skills, and enhancing the children’s ability to play in a group setting, while beginning to learn the essential elements of string technique. 

Prerequisites: None 

Materials: Violin/Viola/Cello (not provided) and a lesson book (provided)

Kids Group Ukulele (not offered Spring 2023) 

Description: The UMKC Conservatory Academy is offering a Ukulele Class for Elementary School Age Students. This will be a fun and informative class. Your child will be singing and strumming chords on the ukulele at the first class. 

Prerequisites: None
Needed Materials: Each student will need to bring their own soprano ukulele to class. Worksheets will be provided.

Youth Group Guitar (not offered Spring 2023)

Description: The UMKC Conservatory Academy is offering a Guitar Class for Middle School Age Students. This will be a fun and informative class that is open for all middle school students age 10-13 years. We will learn guitar skills for pop music accompaniment styles. 

Prerequisites: None
Needed Materials: Each student will need to bring their own acoustic guitar to class. Worksheets will be provided.

Teen

Adult/Teen Guitar (not offered Spring 2023)

Description: The UMKC Conservatory Academy is offering a Guitar Class for Adults and High School Age Students. This will be a fun and informative class that is open for all students age high school to adult. We will learn guitar skills for pop music accompaniment styles. 

Prerequisites: None
Needed Materials: Each student will need to bring their own acoustic guitar to class. Worksheets will be provided.

Keyboard Skills and Music Theory (ages 13-18) – FULL

Description: The Music College Prep course is designed to help prepare students who wish to continue their music studies into college. Students who simply wish to become more rounded musicians, are also welcome! Each class will be evenly divided between music theory fundamentals and group piano skills.

Prerequisites: This class is designed for students who have had at least one year of musical instruction (any instrument). Students are not required to have had piano or theory previously.
Needed Materials: All materials will be provided at the first class, and will need to be checked back in at the end of the semester

Acting Class (Ages 13-18) – FULL

Description: The course will provide acting students with the tools they need to be successful performers for theater, film and television. Students will learn how to audition and to analyze scripts to make strong decisions in performance that help them become confident storytellers. Students will work on monologues, scene and improvised scenarios over the course of the session thus learning new strategies and techniques to easily memorize and deliver confident performances while becoming confident and polished storytellers. Additional sessions on various topics such as stage design and tech may be offered to students throughout the school year.
