About

Committee Purpose & Charge

The UMKC General Education Executive Committee is charged with maintaining the General Education Program in alignment with existing requirements of:

  • Higher Learning Commission
    • HLC Assumed Practice – The institution maintains a minimum requirement for general education for all of its undergraduate programs whether through a traditional practice of distributed curricula (15 semester credits for AAS degrees, 24 for AS or AA degrees, and 30 for bachelor’s degrees) or through integrated, embedded, interdisciplinary, or other accepted models that demonstrate a minimum requirement equivalent to the distributed model.
  • Missouri House Bill 2651: Higher Education Core Curriculum Transfer Act

It achieves this while continuing to provide UMKC students with a high-quality, highly engaging educational experience that inspires their curiosity, and challenges their intellectual capacities with curricular breadth, depth, and interdisciplinary study that reflects the mission of the university. The core and emphasis of the program is to challenge and encourage growth of the skills, knowledge, and values that UMKC students should demonstrate at the conclusion of their studies to demonstrate competence as individual citizens, professionals, and community leaders.

As the primary recommending body for all policy related to general education curriculum and overlap with broader program requirements, the GEEC will approve all course proposals to meet the UMKC Essentials General Education curriculum and specified student learning outcomes, as approved by Faculty Senate. The GEEC is responsible for support of faculty teaching, course development, and assessment with the mission of maintaining and refining the program, which is developed from a student-centric and data-driven perspective.

Course Proposal & Development Information

The head of Course Development for our General Education program is Dea Marx. The process begins every Fall semester for courses to be approved for the following catalog year. However, GECDV 201, GECRT-AH 101, GECRT-SS 101, and GECRT-SC 101 all have the option of having topics. With the use of an already designed course and syllabus template, faculty are given the opportunity to teach a topic of their choosing. Topics are approved each semester and available for scheduling by the time courses are live for enrollment for the following semester.
