Below are some helpful links for participants in the Senegal Study Abroad Program (this page will be updated regularly, so be sure to check back):
- Health
- Health Information for Travelers to Senegal from the CDC (For this trip, you MUST get the Yellow Fever and Covid-19 vaccines (you may also need a negative PCR test to enter Senegal, we will update that information as needed) and we are recommending the other vaccines and medications on the “Most Travelers” list as well, including malaria medication. Your doctor can prescribe the malaria medication and you find a clinic for travel vaccines on this page).
- The CDC also publishes a Healthy Packing List for Senegal, which is very useful (note that you do not need all of these items — your individual needs will vary, but this list is a good place to start).
- Travel Information/Visa/Passports
- State Department Passport Page — if you don’t have a passport, apply for one IMMEDIATELY! If you do have one, be sure to check the expiration date.
- State Department Information on Senegal — useful travel information (note that a visa is NOT required for this program as our stay will be shorter than 90 days).
- STEP Enrollment — page to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. Enrolling will allow the State Department to assist you more quickly should you need their assistance while in Senegal.
- Currency
- Money and Duty Free in Senegal
- Current Exchange Rate
- You do not need to exchange money ahead of time as you can do so in the airport upon arrival and ATMs are ubiquitous in Senegal (be sure to check with your bank regarding fees for international transactions).
- Time
- Senegal is on Greenwich Mean Time and is 6 hours ahead of Kansas City. You can find a world clock for Senegal here.
- Packing
- Pack as lightly as possible! Remember whatever you bring, you have to carry. We are recommending going with carry on only since we have several flight changes and those can result in lost luggage. It’s possible if you follow the tips in the links below and remember that you can buy extra toiletries in Senegal. Also note that you really only need enough clothing for 4-5 days as you can do laundry while we are there.
