NTT Promotion Process

UMKC Process for Promotion of Ranked Non Tenure-Track (NTT) Faculty

Effective December 1, 2022

The University of Missouri policy on ranked NTT faculty is provided in CRR310.035. Any UMKC academic unit that employs ranked NTT faculty must have in place unit-specific policy and procedures for appointment/re-appointment, assignment of workload, evaluation, and promotion of ranked NTT faculty that have been approved by the unit Dean and the Provost. The unit’s procedures for ranked NTT promotion must include review by a faculty committee populated with elected members that include both ranked NTT and tenured faculty at the rank of Professor. The unit’s policy and practices in appointing, renewing/non-renewing, assigning workload to, evaluating, and promoting ranked NTT faculty must be in compliance with CRR310.035.

The 2024 review process, promotion of all ranked NTT faculty will occur on a fixed timeline involving both a unit-level review and a campus-level review process using the Review Promotion and Tenure (RPT) module in myVITA. The adobe portfolio will no longer be used to present candidate materials. The candidate and/or unit representatives should reach out to the Faculty Affairs Specialist (Chris Popoola)  for assistance creating the CV and using the module. Each academic unit must complete its internal reviews of promotion candidates using the RPT module. The unit level reviews must be completed no later than by June 1, 2024. The Provost will review all cases as Chancellor’s designee, culminating in notification of a final decision by July 31, with a promotion effective date of September 1, 2024.

The promotion case submitted for campus-level review should include the following:

  • A copy of the unit’s approved NTT policy and promotion criteria
  • A “Promotion CV” generated using myVITA containing documentation of the candidate’s contributions and performance that meet or exceed the unit’s promotion criteria for the rank sought, noting the guidance provided in 035: “In promotion considerations, the total contribution of the faculty member to the mission of the school, college or academic unit over a sustained period of time should be taken into consideration.  This includes comprehensive documentation of the position, including a letter of appointment identifying home department or unit and the initial position description, communications detailing changes in position responsibilities, and any other statements regarding expected performance.”
  • A letter of evaluation and recommendation on the promotion from the department/division or school-level Promotion Committee, comprised in alignment with CRR310.035 as noted above
  • A letter of evaluation and recommendation on the promotion from the candidate’s department/division chair
  • A letter of evaluation and recommendation on the promotion from the candidate’s Dean

For those that did not use Review, Promotion, and Tenure “RPT”, please send promotion materials to the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs, Diane Filion (filiond@umkc.edu) with a copy to Chris Popoola (popoolac@umkc.edu).
