Roo-minations — Episode 3

What’s your favorite Kansas City hangout?

UMKC introduces the third episode of its monthly feature, “Roo-minations,” which asks students to answer a question. This month’s question is, “What is your favorite Kansas City hangout?”

What is a Roo-mination? Here’s our definition: Roo•mi•na•tion [roo-muh-ney-shun] noun, what a UMKC roo thinks.

What question should we ask next? Post comments on YouTube or submit questions to umkcpublicrelations@umkc.edu.

UMKC is within a short walk or bike, bus or car ride to several popular destinations — including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Country Club Plaza and Westport.

Andrew Payeur, a first-year School of Law student, practices guitar at his favorite Kansas City hangout -- the Student Union rooftop.

Beginning in the fall, bus transportation to these destinations will become easier. Students will receive all-access Metro bus passes, which provide unlimited access to all KCATA bus routes throughout the city and metropolitan area. Students, faculty and staff can borrow free bicycles through Swinney Recreation Center and The Hub, as well.

To make room for a new state-of-the-art parking facility at 50th and Oak Streets, the Oak Street parking structure will close in May. To mitigate this temporary inconvenience, students living at Oak Street Hall and Herman and Dorothy Johnson Hall will be assigned permit parking at the Hospital Hill parking structure at a substantially reduced rate of $44 per semester. Students with state-issued handicap placards or license plates will be exempt from this parking assignment; other exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis using a waiver process.

The parking structure at Hospital Hill is a secure location and offers easy access to the KCATA Troost MAX line running directly between the Volker and Hospital Hill campuses. Additionally, the Volker campus shuttle system will be enhanced with more frequent stops for more convenience to students utilizing the KCATA bus routes.
