Stephanie Kelton Named Chief Economist

Nominate Someone Outstanding for a UMKC Alumni Award

Do you know a UMKC graduate who deserves to be recognized for his or her achievements? Know alumni who are doing great things in their professions or in their communities? Consider nominating them for a 2016 Alumni Award.


The 2016 Alumni Awardees will be honored at the annual luncheon in April 2016 with video tributes. They will each receive either a bronze kangaroo statue or a kangaroo lithograph created by Corbin Bronze. Proceeds from the Alumni Awards go to benefit immediate aid and endowed scholarships.

writingWhat’s a surefire way to help students write more effectively?

One strategy is what renowned writing coach William Zinsser calls “bracketing.” Zinsser asks students to go through the first drafts of papers and delete every possible word. This tactic ensures conciseness, a hallmark of good writing, but it also enables writers to see where they may go off on tangents, use passive rather than active constructions and resort to “padding” papers to meet page requirements instead of providing valid content and commentary.
