Prof. Hackleman Plays for the Pope – 09/29/15

The UMKC Conservatory’s faculty and students often perform in prestigious settings. We are pleased to note that Martin Hackleman, Artist in Residence and Associate Teaching Professor of Horn, performed for Pope Francis’ September, 2015 visit to the United States. Hackleman performed during two of the Pope’s masses in Washington DC.
The first mass was at St. Matthews Cathedral where the Pope addressed the American bishops. Hackleman performed with a brass quintet and timpani. (first picture below above, on the left. Martin Hackleman is second from left) The quintet joined a small choir and cantor for the liturgy. Watch a YouTube video here.
The second mass was at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It was a Holy Mass and Canonization of Father Junipero Serra, and was performed outside the Basilica before a huge crowd, with more inside watching on monitors (Martin is third from left, second photo). Martin played with an orchestra with full brass ensemble, organ and triple choir. Watch a YouTube video here. The brass is not heard until about 30-35 minutes in each video.
