Check this out: More than six dozen big ideas were submitted as part of the UMKC Forward initiative.
Students, faculty, staff and community stakeholders came up with 82 ways to restructure and invest in the university’s future.
Team A has focused on adapting and restructuring. Team B has identified areas for investments to stimulate growth. Within each team, some subcommittees concentrated on academic programs while others studied administrative and university operations.
Here’s the breakdown of ideas:
- Team A academic programs subcommittees turned in 22 ideas, said chair Jake Marszalek, including one that will be shared with Team B.
- Team A administrative and university operations subcommittees turned in 30 ideas, said chair Mark Johnson, with 11 additional ideas that will be shared with Team B.

UMKC Forward was conceived as the coronavirus crisis brought into sharp focus a long-standing issue for UMKC. In recent years, the campus financial landscape has been one of tight budgets, narrow margins and low reserves. With UMKC Forward, the university has an opportunity to fundamentally reimagine its mission as a public research university serving the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area and beyond.
