National Social Science Association Conference – April, 2017

The National Social Science Association is the largest interdisciplinary association in the United States and we offer opportunities for faculty and students to participate in our conferences and seminars and to have the opportunity to publish in our peer reviewed journals and proceedings publications. All presentations at the conference that focus on research, teaching, and technology can be included in our perspectives publication after the conference.  In addition we have two peer reviewed national journals, one that is interactive for technology articles.

We are now sending out a call for proposals for Las Vegas National Technology and Social Science Conference  April 9-11, 2017 at the Flamingo Hotel, central on the Las Vegas strip. We  are able to offer the discounted rate of $90 single/double including  Friday and Saturday arrival and this rate does not include the hospitality tax that is normal at all Las Vegas hotels now.

The conference registration fee includes one year membership in the association, a complimentary cocktail party on Sunday night, a continental breakfast on Monday and Tuesday, an awards luncheon on Monday, and all breaks.  All equipment is provided for presentations at the conference. Please click here to view proposal application.

This year we are offering students a $250 award for the winner of the undergraduate and graduate student paper competition.  Plus we include the paper winners in our national peer reviewed journal.  We hope that you are able to inform your students of this opportunity to participate in a national conference in Las Vegas in April, 2017 and to have them participate in our student paper competition.

The proposal form for the National Technology and Social Science Conference is attached; we are planning for the largest Las Vegas national meeting in the history of the association which is now in its 47th year.  We hope that you can join us and we look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas in April, 2017.

2017 African American Read-In

The 2017 African American Read-In has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 22, 2017 from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm in the iX Theatre at the Miller Nichols Library.  Consider this note to be your open invitation to listen or share at this free, open to the public event!  The UMKC Libraries is proud to take part in our eighth consecutive offering of the African American Read-In, which was created by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) in 1989.  Last year’s event was full of fantastic readings and performances from students, staff, faculty, and community members.

Registration for listeners and sharers is now open online at https://library.umkc.edu/read-in-2017.  Complimentary snack packs will be available again this year, thanks to sponsorship provided by the UMKC Friends of the Library.  For those of you who wish to participate as a sharer, simply select and share an excerpt from works that are authored by African Americans.  That’s all there is to it!  Not sure what you’d like to read?  Click on the following links to the MERLIN online catalog for some possible suggestions:

On behalf of the planning committee, thank you for your support of this Black History Month celebration of African American literature and literacy.  If you have any questions about the event or about participating as a sharer, please feel free to contact one of us:

In addition, please feel free to share this email and flyer with other folks who may be interested in the African American Read-In.  We’re looking forward to seeing you and celebrating African American literature with you again!
