The University of Missouri-Kansas City‘s Department of Art and Art History is welcoming two internationally-know visiting artists, Keith Achepohl and Lynn Manos, for a two-week residency this month.
Both artists will give lectures on their work Wednesday, July 11, in the Fine Arts Building. Manos will present “Drawing from the Shore,” at 10:30 a.m. in room FA 110. Achepohl will present “Garden as Inspiration” at 1:30 p.m. in room FA 106. A reception with light refreshments will be held from 12-1:30 p.m. in the UMKC Gallery of Art in room FA 203.
Achepohl received his bachelor’s degree from Knox College and his master’s degree from the University of Iowa. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from Pacific Lutheran University and Knox College. He is professor emeritus at the University of Iowa. Achepohl has used gardens in his work for several decades. Gardens have served as both a muse and a metaphor for his many paintings, etchings and most recent watercolors.
His works are displayed in many distinguished collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Museum of Modern Art in Kobe, Japan, and the Library of Congress. He has been awarded a number of grants and fellowships, including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant, a senior Fulbright Grant to Egypt and Turkey, and a Richard Florsheim Grant. He currently resides in Eugene, Oregon.
Manos received her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Illustration and Design from the University of Kansas. She is an alumna of UMKC’s graduate program in Studio Art in Printmaking. She taught in the Kansas City area for more than 30 years. Her work is focused on drawings of boats. Her works are displayed in collections in the Municipality of Olympos, in Karpathos, Greece; the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; and the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She currently resides in Florida.
