KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Missouri-Kansas City has announced that all three 2012 applicants to the prestigious German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarship program have received awards for study in Germany.
DAAD, a nationally competitive fellowship program for international research and study, is an alliance of higher education institutions in Germany annually providing services and funding to more than 67,000 highly-qualified students and faculty.
Elliott Goff, a UMKC junior majoring in mechanical engineering, will spend the summer in Berlin and continue research begun with UMKC Assistant Professor Amber Stern, School of Computing and Engineering, on age-related bone formation. Goff’s award is for an undergraduate student in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. He will be paired with a doctoral candidate in bio-medical engineering at the Julius Wolff Institute.
Senior Courtney Neaveill has a full two-year fellowship at one of three German universities she selected. Neaveill will complete a master’s degree in history, with an emphasis in public history, and a minor in German.
Kevin Baker, graduate student in history, will research his master’s thesis on the experiences of ordinary German soldiers at the Eastern Front during World War I. Baker’s mastery of the German language will enable him to examine the unpublished letters and diaries of these soldiers and their families. He will examine documents preserved at the Bundesarchiv-Militararchiv in Freiburg im Breisgau.
All three students applied for their scholarships through UMKC’s International Academics Program (IAP) office. Together with students, IAP identifies the programs that best meet student academic and personal needs. IAP then connects UMKC students with the international programs that offer an enriching and rewarding study-abroad experience.
