American Concrete Institute President Ken Hover speaks
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) will host an American Concrete Institute (ACI) Kansas and Missouri chapter luncheon and a regional pervious concrete student competition. The luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15 at UMKC’s University Center #106, 5000 Holmes St., Kansas City, Mo. The competition will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. at SCE’s Civil Engineering Lab (Rm. 123), 5110 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, Mo. Attendees are eligible for one professional development hour credit. Kenneth C. Hover, ACI president, will present the luncheon’s keynote speech, “The Concrete Quality Control Challenge: Twins Separated at Birth”. The speech will compare concrete cylinders and flat concrete that forms a structure. One was made in layers and placed by hand with a scoop while the other was squeezed, compressed, decompressed, dropped and splattered into one or many layers.
Hover also is a professional engineer and professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Stephen Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He is a member of ACI Committees 305 (hot weather), 306 (cold weather), 318A (concrete and construction), past-chair of 308 (curing), and past-chair of 301C (materials and construction).
Regional high school and undergraduate students will create pervious concrete mixtures and then test the concrete for permeability and strength. The final scores are determined from the permeability, strength and cost.
“This regional competition will really prepare students for the national pervious concrete competition, which will be held at the ACI Cincinnati convention in October,” said John Kevern, assistant professor of Civil Engineering at SCE. Kevern helped develop the national pervious concrete competition in 2009.
