SYDNEY CRIMMINS

Health Sciences | School of Nursing and Health Studies  | 2015 | Volleyball | National Student Athlete Advisory Committee Representative for the WAC

You’re from Clay Center, Kansas. What brought you to UMKC?

I was recruited for basketball and then chose volleyball my sophomore year. I also was interested in health sciences, and UMKC has an excellent reputation and resources for that.

Where is UMKC taking you?

It’s taking me to travel to Europe to play volleyball, to an internship at Kansas City Sports Commission, and to pursue a master’s degree in Public Administration.

Since entering college, what have you learned about yourself?

College has provided me the means to truly discover who I am as a person. I have learned that I enjoy working with other people and organizing events. I thrive on community service initiatives and being a leader, not only on the court but also in the classroom.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received from a professor?

From one particular professor, I have felt encouraged to stand for what I believe in and advocate for others and myself when an opportunity for change presents itself.

Who do you admire most at UMKC and why?

I view UMKC Athletics as part of my family. My supportive teammates and coaches inspire me to be a better person, student and athlete daily. The entire UMKC Athletics staff provides a positive atmosphere and give me the tools, resources and support to have a fun and fulfilling student-athlete career.

What’s your greatest fear?

My greatest fear is not performing to my expectations. I am fearful of not only letting others down, but most of all myself.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Ten years from now I picture myself in an administrative position in healthcare or sports. I also see myself being highly involved with various organizations in the Kansas City area that have blessed me with many opportunities, including student athlete advisory committees on the campus and national levels.

What is one word that best describes you and why?

Ambitious. I strive to be ambitious in all areas of my life.  To me, being ambitious doesn’t only apply to physical tasks and goals I have, but also being an ambitious well-rounded person.  I work to better the people around me and strive to put my best foot forward in the classroom, on the volleyball court, in a professional setting and even with my friends.
