UMKC College of Arts and Sciences helps organize April 27 event
KANSAS CITY, MO. – “New Letters on the Air” – an independent production of the University of Missouri-Kansas City‘s (UMKC) College of Arts and Sciences – will speak to novelist Arthur Phillips at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday April 27, at the Central Kansas City Public Library, 14 West 10th St., Kansas City, Mo. Phillips will speak to public radio host Angela Elam in front of a live audience about his April 2011 faux memoir, “The Tragedy of Arthur”. A reception will take place at 6 p.m. before the interview.
Phillips’ “New Letters on the Air” appearance is part of the Writers at Work series, organized by Kansas City novelist Whitney Terrell and co-sponsored by the UMKC Department of English and the Writers at Work Round Table. “The Tragedy of Arthur” is about a character named Arthur Phillips who struggles with his con-artist father. Imprisoned and nearing the end of his life, his father shares a secret he has kept for half a century: a previously-unknown play by Shakespeare. Arthur and his twin sister set out to fulfill their father’s wish to have the play published – unless it turns out to be their father’s last great con.
A five-time Jeopardy! champion, jazz musician and former speech writer, Phillips also has written “Prague,” “The Egyptologist,” “Angelica” and “The Song is You”.
“New Letters on the Air” airs locally on KCUR 89.3 FM at 6 a.m. on Sunday mornings and is the radio show companion to New Letters magazine. Broadcasting literary readings and interviews since 1977, “New Letters on the Air” is distributed nationally through the Public Radio Satellite System and the Public Radio Exchange.
