We are Kansas City’s university, and our hometown’s energy influences everything that happens here. We welcome our community to campus for an array of events, and we’re also happy to recommend opportunities on behalf of our alumni and friends. These activities are part of what give UMKC a vibrant campus life, and make UMKC an arts and culture powerhouse.
1. UMKC Men’s Basketball vs. New Mexico State
Good to know:
UMKC is Kansas City’s Division I sports team.
The game is at 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27 at Municipal Auditorium, 301 W. 13th St., Kansas City, Mo. Current UMKC students receive free admission to all UMKC athletic events with ID. General admission tickets start at $13 and can be purchased online.
2. ‘The Secret of Courage’
The Secret of Courage, a world premiere production with magic and wonderment, is the next co-production between UMKC Theatre and The Coterie. The play begins with 13-year-old Jack McCall learning some very bad news about his health. His best friend Waddy is not as concerned as he is, since you hear stories of people getting over this illness all the time.

Two UMKC graduate theatre students founded The Coterie.

3. ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’
Winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play, Curious Incident tells the story of 15-year-old Christopher, a boy with an extraordinary brain who is exceptionally intelligent but ill-equipped for dealing with everyday life. When Christopher falls under suspicion for killing the neighbor’s dog, he sets out on a journey to find the real culprit that will change his life forever.
The Kansas City Repertory Theatre production runs Jan. 26 through Feb 18 in Spencer Theatre on the UMKC Campus, 4949 Cherry St., Kansas City, Mo. Tickets can be purchased from the KCRep website.
4. Conservatory Recitals
The UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance offers recitals and performances throughout the year.

5. ‘Project Dawn’
In this vital and surprisingly funny new play presented by the Unicorn Theatre, seven actresses play fourteen characters on both sides of a radical new courtroom experiment. Every day these lawyers, judges, and social workers provide support for women desperate to escape the cycles of drug addiction, prostitution and poverty. In the tradition of Orange is the New Black, get a glimpse inside the lives of women struggling to change their circumstances against the odds. Playwright Karen Hartman explores the thin line that separates freedom from incarceration, inside the real life Project Dawn Court in Philadelphia, PA.

Three UMKC Theatre graduates started Unicorn Theatre.

6. A Look Inside Our Antique Bookplate Collection
This free exhibit is on display now and will run through the spring semester. It is on the Fourth Floor, Dean’s Gallery, Miller Nichols Library, 800 E. 51st St.
7. New Exhibit at UMKC Gallery of Art
The UMKC Gallery of Art announces the first exhibit of the spring semester, Images Flash.
The exhibit opens Thursday, Jan. 25 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 24. An Opening Reception is scheduled for 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25 in the UMKC Gallery of Art, Room 203, Fine Arts Building, 5015 Holmes St.
