The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Institute for Human Development’s (IHD) Youth LEAD program is hosting a Connect, Educate & Change Symposium. The free day-long workshop will provide information for individuals with developmental disabilities, their families and friends, non-profit organizations, schools and local leaders. The workshop will focus on community resources, person-centered planning, self-determination, career planning and higher education.
Missouri Supreme Court Judge Richard B. Teitelman will present the keynote speech. As the first legally blind judge to serve on Missouri’s highest court, Judge Teitelman did not allow his disability to hinder his career. During his tenure as executive director Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, the organization earned a national reputation for the range of programs it provides to Missourians. Judge Teitelman’s dedication to underrepresented people has earned him many honors, including the Missouri Bar President’s Award and the American Bar Association’s Make a Difference Award.

Managed by IHD – one of 67 national University Centers for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities –Youth LEAD provides teens and young adults with developmental disabilities resources and support to set and meet personal goals.
IHD projects span the full range of the human condition and life cycle, from prevention to gerontology and address varying community needs, from urban mission to Latino community development in rural counties. IHD also focuses on larger concepts of community inclusion through diversity, cultural competency and social capital.
“This project is a perfect example of an effective community/university partnership for effective social change,” said Carl F. Calkins, Ph.D., Director of the UMKC Institute for Human Development. “It’s delightful to see the level of commitment and involvement of young people when given the opportunity to lead. It also promotes the concept of self-determination, which is an important construct in the life of any individual.”
