Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design hosts Bud Persons Scholarship Competition Feb. 25
They won’t graduate for a few more years, but second-year architecture students in the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) College of Arts and Sciences‘ Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design (AUP+D) will be presenting their work to a jury of Kansas City architecture and design leaders at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25 at AUP+D’s Katz Hall, 5005 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, Mo.
During the spring 2011 semester – as part of the Bud Persons Scholarship Competition – students toiled for hours on designs and models of a museum/gallery for a collection of modern art and visiting exhibitions. Ted Seligson, visiting professor and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA); and John Eck, adjunct professor and architect, charged the Architectural Design Studio II students to design the building to feature a number of specific pieces that are on exhibit at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Each year, AUP+D selects jury members to model how the AIA would assemble a design jury. The 2011 jury includes Rachael Blackburn Cozad, Ph.D. and director and chief executive officer of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art; Jan Schall, Ph.D., Sanders Sosland Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; Bob Simmons, AIA, MPA and interim vice chancellor of Administrative Services; Joy Swallow, FAIA, architect and chair of AUP+D; and Jay Tomlinson, president of the Kansas City chapter of AIA and an architect.
AUP+D thrives upon such collaborations with design professionals, and the department constantly works with the Kansas City community, said Ted Seligson, visiting professor and architect. In addition to working with the local community, AUP+D collaborates with Kansas State University’s College of Architecture, Planning and Design.
Once students complete two years at AUP+D, they matriculate to K-State to earn master’s degrees in architecture, interior architecture/product design or landscape architecture.
Helix / Architecture + Design created the $500 scholarship to honor the late Bud Persons, who served as a senior architect at Helix and taught architecture courses at UMKC. Persons’ family also contributed to the scholarship.
About the Edwin S. “Bud” Persons Prize:
Edwin S. “Bud” Persons was a senior interior architect with Helix / Architecture + Design for seven years. As an accomplished interior designer in the industry for nearly 30 years, Bud loved designing corporate and residential interiors where his passion for color, details and unexpected combinations delighted his clients and made him an inspiration to other designers. Helix / Architecture + Design established the Edwin S. “Bud” Persons Award in 2004 to honor the magnetic personality, enthusiasm and many contributions Bud made to this industry. The funds intended to recognize the life and work of Bud Persons by promoting the study and knowledge of architecture and design through a scholarship grant awarded to students attending UMKC.
