Takes on unintended consequences of going “green”

Will we walk the walk? Author David Owen posits that we already have what we need to live sustainably. His concern, and the crux of the argument in his new book, is that increased efficiency may lead us to consume even more.

A Kansas City native, Owen will return to talk about the environmental woes highlighted in his book, The Conundrum: How Scientific Innovation, Increased Efficiency and Good Intentions Can Make Our Energy and Climate Problems Worse. Owen’s appearance is sponsored by the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Cockefair Chair as part of the fall speaker series. His presentation is at 7 p.m November 8. in Room 401 of the Student Union, 5100 Cherry, on UMKC’s Volker campus. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Owen is a prolific author and journalist whose quirky views on golf, do-it-yourself home remodeling, fatherhood and American education have won him a large audience. He is a regular contributor to Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, Golf Digest and Esquire. He has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1991. Owen has been named one of The Fifty Funniest American Writers and is the author of more than a dozen books. He lives in Washington, Conn., with his wife, writer Ann Hodgman. Their two grown children are also writers.
