Bringing arts to the community

Conservatory of Music and Dance reaches out

In the past year, the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance has continued to accumulate several accolades – from Zhou Long winning the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in music to the concert jazz band taking Bobby Watson’s “The Gates BBQ Suite” on tour to Japan. At the same time, the Conservatory constantly works on a local level to bring arts to the community.

“The Conservatory is part of an active and engaged urban university – we do much more than perform and compose,” said Conservatory Dean Peter Witte. “We are committed to the belief that the arts belong to every child and adult in every community, and our music education, music therapy and preparatory programs annually reach more than 2,400 people, ages 2-102.”

With the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and the Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity changing the arts landscape of Kansas City, the Conservatory continues to search for ways to better engage with a renewed city center.
