Blaine Leonard, the president-elect of the Reston, Va.-based American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will visit the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Computing and Engineering at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8 at 534 Robert H. Flarsheim Hall, 5110 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, Mo. After he speaks with Dean Kevin Truman and departmental chairs, Leonard will tour the School of Computing and Engineering and meet with students.
At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, the School of Computing and Engineering Dean, faculty, students and President-elect Leonard will attend the ASCE Kansas City Section meeting at the Bristol Seafood Grill, 51 E. 14th St., Kansas City, Mo. At that meeting, the ASCE will present two School of Computing and Engineering senior civil engineering majors – Marc Phillips and Bryan Glynn – with awards.
Phillips, who serves as president of UMKC’s ASCE chapter and co-captain of the 2009 Steel Bridge Team, will receive an Outstanding Senior Award. Phillips has served as an officer of the ASCE UMKC Chapter and co-captain of the School of Computing and Engineering’s nationally-ranked 2008 Steel Bridge Team.
Glynn, who the engineering faculty described as one of their most dedicated and professional students, received the Distinguished Senior Award. He served as a team leader for Professor Deborah O’Bannon’s 2009 capstone design class, which the Clemson, S.C.-based National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) selected as one of the top six projects in the nation. NCEES awards recognize engineering programs that demonstrate meaningful partnerships between professionals and students.
“These awards are an incredible honor for the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering, because the American Society of Civil Engineers is the oldest national professional engineering organization and it represents more than 146,000 members of the civil engineering profession,” said Dean Truman. “The president-elect’s visit also is an honor, because he only visits a handful of engineering schools each year.”
