Thad Wilson, Ph.D., FNP-BC, associate professor and associate dean at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Nursing has been elected to serve as the 2009-2010 president of the American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP), a national non-profit association that provides advocacy, continuing education and research support for its members.
“It is a tremendous honor to lead such a wonderful organization,” Wilson said. “I hope to continue the College’s mission to advocate, provide support and improve practice for nurse practitioners.”
The ACNP was founded in 1994 by a coalition of state and regional nurse practitioner (NP) organizations as part of an initiative to unify, coordinate and galvanize the NP community. As president of the College, Wilson will provide overall leadership for ACNP, including implementing strategic plan priorities, representing ACNP in public forums and communicating ACNP initiatives with government and policy colleagues, as well as other stakeholders. He will also serve as the official ACNP representative in all policy and organizational matters, including meetings with other national NP and nursing groups, testimony before Congress/national regulatory agencies and media interviews.
Wilson has been a certified family nurse practitioner since 1985 and has served on faculty at UMKC since 1995. He has been funded by the CDC, American Nurses Foundation and other organizations to conduct research on immunizations and school-based immunization programs. Findings from his research have been published in several peer-reviewed journals and presented both regionally and nationally. He is co-founder of the multidisciplinary Mid-America Immunization Coalition, recently receiving the Coalition’s first-ever Immunization Hero Award.
