Contracts have been signed and the students are ready to teach

On May 9, 2009, eight students graduated from UMKC as members of the inaugural class of the Institute for Urban Education. The nationally-recognized program is a model for urban teacher preparation with an emphasis on math, science and literacy. After 1,400 hours of field experience working in urban schools, the graduates are prepared to enter the classroom as full-fledged teachers – no longer student teachers.

They will teach at the following schools:

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools:

Destiny Byers – Quindaro Elementary

Emily Hohendorf – McKinley Elementary

Britney Sanders – New Chelsea Elementary

Kansas City, Missouri School District

Alexandra Clayton, Teonna Lee and Janita Butler – Garfield or Garcia Elementary

Hickman Mills School District:

Asha Glover and Joanna Rieg – Dobbs Elementary
