Edgar Snow Project

Hi! My name is Autumn Neal and I’m in my last semester as a History undergrad. My concentration is Antiquity but I’m also very interested in the history of Kansas City. This semester I’m working on a website that we are calling the Edgar Snow Project. I’ll share the link here once it’s all done. This is a website that three other students and I started work on in our Digital History course this past spring. The focus is on a journalist from Kansas City who was vital to our knowledge of Communist China as well as the communication between the U.S. and China in the 70s. The site will be shown to attendees of the Edgar Snow Symposium here in Kansas City that runs from October 16 – 18. There will be artists, educators, and government officials from both the U.S. and China in attendance. That’s kind of a lot of pressure…but a good pressure. I’m excited about it.

The plan is to write weekly about the process of building the website and the challenges I’m sure I’ll face along the way. Let’s be honest, I’ve already run into quite a few. Since I’ve been working on this for a while, I’m sure that I’ll go back in time every couple of weeks and post about something from last semester. The process of digitizing photos and learning how to work with new tools was difficult but fun and I’d like to share my experiences with everyone.

Kansas City Public Library Seeks Summer Interns in Digital History

The Kansas City Public Library welcomes talented graduate students to apply for digital history internships at the library for the Summer 2014 semester. Interns will earn course credits and gain hands-on experience with the library’s digital history projects, especially the Civil War on the Western Border project. Opportunities exist for students to work in the following areas:

Creating K-12 lesson plans and curricular materials based on the site (Honorariums exist for lesson plan creation);
Content development;
Designing or creating an RFP for a mobile history app;
Creating online versions of our local history exhibits; or
Metadata, digitization, and curation through the library’s content management system.

Paid Summer Internships at the American Truck Historical Society

Position Description: Collections Intern
This summer, the American Truck Historical Society is looking for at least two to four interns to assist in the digitization and cataloging of the White Motor Photo Collection. As necessary, the Collections Intern will support ATHS with other collection management projects.

Position Responsibilities:

Enter accession and donor information for objects in the collection not already entered into the museum’s collections management software PastPerfect
Update old records already in PastPerfect
Correlate all items with correct paper and database files. If these files do not already exist, create said file
Ensure all objects are properly marked with old and new accession numbers
Digitally photograph or scan each object and add images to PastPerfect

Position Details:
Duration/Hours: 12 weeks; approximately 25 hours per week
Pay: $8.00/hr
Start Date: June 2^nd, 2014 (flexible)

Position Requirements:
Intended graduation with a focus in Museum Studies, History, or related field; strong attention to detail; excellent written and oral communication skills; and ability to work well alone and in a group.
