Our goal through this lecture series is to encourage UMKC students, staff, faculty and the Kansas City community to build upon the courageous, non-violent activism of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., and to increase awareness of present day avenues to advocate for civil rights through free thought, action and scholarship.

This year’s speaker is Harry Edwards, M.A., Ph.D. Edwards is a sociologist and activist who has written, consulted and lectured extensively about the intersection of sport, race and society. A college athlete himself, Edwards led a movement that sparked demonstrations in the 1960s against racial inequities and barriers in sport and society. 33 1/3: A Revolution in Sound
Dates: now through May 15, 2020
Time: open daily, Location: Miller Nichols Library Ground Floor
Details: Introduced in 1948, the long play (LP) record transformed the way we experienced recorded sound. Previous recorded formats played at 78 revolutions per minute and could only contain three to five minutes of audio. LPs, which play at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute, hold up to 22 minutes of audio per side, allowing listeners to enjoy extended musical performances uninterrupted. The increased capacity and microgroove technology of the LP ushered in the age of Hi-Fidelity, a revolution in recorded sound. This exhibit displays a variety of records from the Marr Sound Archives to celebration their momentous 33 1/3 anniversary. Visit the exhibit to see the LPs up close. For more information, visit their website: https://library.umkc.edu/news-events/marr-anniversary.

The Poetics of Invention

Share in the story of one University of Oklahoma professor, inventor, and entrepreneur as he attempts to make English more accessible to the 350 million Chinese learners in the world. His goal: merge the world’s two most-spoken languages in a brand new way – at the level of their phonetic DNA. We are excited to host this traveling exhibit to share these exciting innovations with our Kansas City community! The exhibit is free to view, and open during library open hours.
