Parent & Family Programs
Stay involved. Get connected. Support your Roo. Welcome to our UMKC family!
UMKC Parent and Family Programs informs and connects parents and family members of current UMKC students to our university community with the goal of supporting your student’s personal and academic journey towards graduation. We value parents and family members as critical partners in student success and retention, collaborating to empower appropriate involvement in and advocacy for your student’s UMKC experience.

Letters from Home
UMKC Parent and Family Programs offers Letters from Home as a way for parents, family members, and Roo supporters to connect with your students during times of transition in college.
Letters from Home invites you to write some encouraging words to your student that will be mailed to them on your behalf. These encouraging words can be words of affirmation, opportunities for reflection, or even hopes for the next few weeks into the next few years.
If you would like to personally mail a letter to your student, we have Letter from Home stationary just for you!
UMKC Taste of Home
Food brings families together. Share your Taste of Home with our Roo Family!
Now more than ever, we’re flocking to our kitchens to enjoy the simple comforts of cooking. Whether you are a foodie influencer, or just want to showcase a favorite quick and easy meal, share your talents with us, as we build our UMKC Taste of Home Cookbook.
We are looking for those “signature” family recipes–the ones that families make again and again. The recipes that UMKC families make when their student comes home. Those must-try dishes that have been in your family for generations, or your kitchen hacks that have become your favorite go-to family meals during these past few months.
Select recipes will be featured in the UMKC Taste of Home Cookbook, sponsored by UMKC Parent and Family Programs, Office of Student Involvement (OSI), Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA), and Campus Dining Services.
First in the Family
UMKC defines a first-generation college student as any student whose parents or guardians did not receive a bachelor’s degree in the United States. First Gen Roo strives to build a supportive, energetic, and inclusive community to enrich our first-generation students’ experiences at UMKC. We believe that parents, families, and supporters should have all the information and resources available to support First Gen Roos.
